Case Study: Facilitating a 7% Increase In Maximum Speed

Increasing top speed in athletes quick quicker

In July 2024, 292 Performance hosted an off-season camp in Ibiza, working closely with 25 professional footballers. With each individual, 292 Performance follow a three-phase process to add impact to physical performance. This case study highlights our insights and outcomes, showcasing how tailored training can lead to significant improvements.

Phase 1: Performance Planning

Before the athlete’s arrival, we conducted a thorough situational analysis by collaborating with their current club. This foundational information aided our performance planning. We reviewed GPS data from the past few months and analysed the athlete’s current off-season training regime with their club and national team. Additionally, video clips of gameplay were examined to ensure our training aligned with the specific positional and in-game demands faced by the athlete.

Phase 2: Performance Monitoring

During the performance monitoring phase, we implemented targeted assessments to identify key performance markers and areas for improvement. Utilising AI-driven technology from Speedworks, we conducted a 10m acceleration test to analyze the athlete’s sprinting biomechanics. Furthermore, a progressive load back squat test using Output Sports VBT technology provided instant feedback on strength and movement efficiency.

These assessments helped us pinpoint critical aspects of running mechanics and force application. The goals were clear: improve the athlete’s forward projection, punch, and push while increasing strength capacity for rate of force development.

Phase 3: Performance Coaching and Results

The final phase focused on performance coaching, where the athlete received individualised coaching tailored to their needs. Our coaching emphasised optimising contact times during sprints, enhancing horizontal force application, and understanding the correlation between squat movement velocity and varying loads.

As a result of our comprehensive approach, the athlete experienced a 7% increase in maximum sprint speed, culminating in a personal best (PB) for the season. The athlete left the camp feeling physically prepared for the demanding international fixtures ahead.

Our data-driven structured approach ensures that every athlete receives the personalised attention they need to improve performance.
